push the boat out – special event – 13 may 2017

Thursday, March 30th, 2017

Visitors will have the opportunity to sail with experienced sailors, visit the club and enjoy Culmore from the water.

Come and visit our club, have a look around the dinghies. Go for a sail around Culmore Bay in the capable hands of our experienced sailors and maybe even skipper the boat!! Each session will last 1 hour and you will be taught the basics of sailing or if you want just sit back, relax and enjoy the view.

On arrival you will be introduced to your skipper for the day. You will be shown the dinghy to familiarize you with it, given a safety briefing then it will be time to get in the dinghy and set sail. You will be given the opportunity to help sail the dinghy and ask the skipper questions.

A series of extraordinary events today.
In the first race there was a general recall.
In the second start Bill J and Ciaran M (great to see him sailing again this year) capsized at the mark. Anton and Jack H got a good start but followed the Gallaghers around the wrong mark, followed by Bill J and leading to the OD call the race off (head in hands). Attempted start number 3 went well but then lightening stuck and the race was abandoned.

After a short wait on shore the lightening passed away and the OD instructed boats back out.

In the second race some boats went around the wrong mark leading to several DSQ’s. Congratulations to Jack H who was sure he was right about the course marks – and it turns out he was!

Racing commenced at 11.00am. Also at 11 was the launch of the new Foyle Sailability boat at the pontoon in town. LFYC are pleased to be involved in this project which had its first outing last summer and its great to see it taking the next step of buying its own boats. There is a wonderful sense of joy when you first realise that you are in control and making way powered by the wind. This project makes that joyful experience accessible to people with disabilities.

Back to racing in Culmore, a long course today, starting at the slipway up to harts, powerstation, run down to conniborrow, reach over to faughan x2. Bill J/Alan T and Ken and Davy Louden had a great race in 2 with Ken and Davy having trailed for most of the race eventually managing the building ebb slightly better to come out as winners.

Joe K and Richard G LFYC handicap has been changed to PY (1127) at the request of the skipper.
