Racing on Sat 15/08/20

Just two boats sailing today. James P H and Alan T and Anton H and Joy W. Both races went to James and Alan. That also concludes Series A. A conclusion that is of sorts. Series A was scrambled together spanning the lockdown – but we have a result and congratulations go to Anton H and Joy W who take the series for 2020.

No sailing today – no wind

Racing on 04/08/20

No sailing today – too windy. James P and Alan T went out or a burn in their GP.

Race 3+4

So almost 5 months after race day one of the season we are back on track. It was a fine day for the restart of the season. A good breeze but a bit damp, good spirits nonetheless. Great to see David T and Son out sailing again. Welcome back guys! Anton H and Joy W going well today in the GP.

Race 1+2

So, somewhat in the shadow of the Coronavirus the sailing season started. On the 14th of March four brave and hardy boats gathered for the first race of the season. It was windy! In race one Bill J in the club laser hit some technical issues and was out before the race started. Anton H managed to catch up on James P H and Alan T in their new GP and took the race on LFYC handicap. In race two Anton H capsized his Laser just before start. Got back up well enough and figured he was well placed for a nice start line. For a few moments all was going well. He then cut the end of the pier to tight and came to crunching stop as the dagger board hit the submerged pier. The OD managed (just) to suppress laughter and everybody sympathized in the usual LFYC way.

James and Alan screamed off and won the race going very well in the new GP.

And so ended day one of the season.

The days sailing reported above might pass without further comment EXCEPT for the Coronavirus. The Commodore has suspended all sailing activity for the time being. We will need to figure out a new schedule in due course. For the meantime its goodnight from LFYC, stay safe and we look forward to future fairer winds and meeting again sooner rather than later.

Last race of the year today. Congratulations to Aidan O D who wins the Frostbite series. He drew on points with Anton H but wins it on more firsts. George G and Kevin T also draw on points with George G winning on the basis that he had one First place. Many thanks to Liam and Pete and Ken L for their support in the frostbite series.

Frostbite 23/11/19

Mild today. We managed three races. Very competitive starts and great racing.  Anto H managed to get nice acceleration out of the tidal line on the channel. Nice zig zag course over the channel and back.

Frostbite 16/11/19

Four boats sailing. Very cold today. The two minute start sequence was put into operation. A course was devised to ensure lots of mark roundings to keep everybody warm. Aidan O D sailing brilliantly. Many thanks to Ken L for the scones. Thanks also to Liam and Pete for being the OD and rescue cover.

Frostbite 09/11/19

Three boats sailing. The OD was near despair when all three boats went the wrong way or were over the line. All good fun!

Frostbite 02/11/19

Welcome to the frostbite season. Five boats racing today. great to see Joy W sailing the laser and going very well. For the Frostbite season all Lasers have a Handicap of 1150 and a Solo has a handicap of 1230. Today we were sailing in Culmore bay in a nice breeze.

Races 8 26/10/19 Hot Toddy

And once again the end of season is marked with the Hot Toddy race. Many thanks to George D with the whiskeys and to Fiona and Tracey who catered so kindly for everyone. It was a windy day that gradually blew up to non sailable. George G called it as it was blowing up and wisely headed in when he was passing near the clubhouse. Due to the conditions just one race was sailed. Once all in safe everyone hit the whiskeys. Congratulations to Bill J/James J and Joe McC who win series H overall. Looking forward to next year already, in the meantime frostbite season awaits…

Anton H had a close escape and was very lucky not to go for a swim just before the finish line in Race 1. A similar gust took Ken and Davy for a swim just after Race 1. Race 1 was shortened to allow a tanker come out of port.

Peace Bridge Race R1

James P H/Alan T 2
Anton H/Joy W 3
Bill J 4
Kevin T 5
George G 6

The annual Peace Bridge Race was held today. Starting the race was tricky as the wind was blowing from the NW and the tide was coming in. The decision was made to start the race going upwind heading to Leonard’s mark from the Perch. For some boats it was difficult to reach the mark against the tide. In light winds a big spread quickly occurred between the lead and following boats. Anton H/Joy W were going well and managed to catch up a bit. The race was shortened as the wind dropped. Congratulations to Ken and Davy L who won the race in a close battle with James P/Alan T the whole way up the river.

Many thanks to the rescue boats who came up the river and for providing the long tow home. Thanks also to the OD who had to make the calls to day.

Just one race today as the wind was light with the first race taking 90 minutes. Great close racing today. Ken and Davy were over the line and had to come back. All boats heading into a strong tide each one marking each other rather than looking for the best water. ken and Davy L pulled into the lead on the first beat. The lead changed several times in the race. James P H/Alan T hit a mark and had to take a penalty turn. Anton H and Joy w also hit a mark and had to take turn. Anton H/Joy W managed to stay ahead of Ken and Davy L on a long spinnaker run home.

Bill J sailing in a Laser today and doing very well.

Race 1 +2 Tues 02/07/19
